Deconstruction

New Lynn Cluster – Deconstruction Overview

IMPORTANT PROJECT NOTE:

IMPORTANT NOTE: All four homes on Bolton Street were connected, forming one long, continuous building. Rather than treating them as four separate units and completing each one individually, TROW Group approached the work as a single, coordinated project. This meant carrying out each stage of deconstruction across all four homes together, from soft stripping through to foundation works, allowing for a more streamlined and coordinated approach to the work.

Along Bolton Street in New Lynn, four homes affected by Cyclone Gabrielle became part of Auckland’s wider flood recovery journey.

When Cyclone Gabrielle struck Aotearoa in February 2023, the damage extended well beyond buildings and infrastructure. For many families, the floods brought uncertainty, displacement, and the difficult decision to leave behind homes where years of memories had been made.

New Lynn was among the communities affected by the flooding. Each home had its own story, representing a place where families had lived, grown, and built their lives.

Through Auckland Council’s Auckland Recovery Office (ARO) Flood Recovery Programme, TROW Group was engaged to deconstruct four homes along Bolton Street, supporting the ongoing recovery of properties impacted by the cyclone.

Our approach focuses on recovering as much value as possible from each property. Rather than treating everything as waste, our deconstruction process identifies materials that can be salvaged for reuse, sent for recycling, or recovered for other purposes. This helps reduce the volume of material sent to landfill while keeping valuable resources in circulation.

Working across four properties along the same street also formed part of the wider effort to support flood recovery at a neighbourhood level. While every property presents its own considerations, our team remains focused on carrying out the work safely, responsibly, and with an understanding of the significance these homes hold for the people who once lived in them.

The New Lynn Cluster reflects TROW Group’s commitment to helping Auckland recover from Cyclone Gabrielle through sustainable deconstruction. By combining practical site clearance with resource recovery and waste minimisation, we are working to ensure that recovery considers not only what needs to be removed, but also what can be retained and given a second life.

COMBINED RECOVERY STATS

The statistics below reflect the combined deconstruction results across all 4 properties. Reuse refers to items recovered and sent to our reuse partners to be given a second life. Recycling covers materials sent to our recycling partners to be processed into new products or materials, such as turning timber into mulch. Hardfill refers to heavy, dense, non-organic materials that are recycled into aggregate for future use, while landfill represents general waste that could not be recovered for reuse or recycling and was sent to landfill.
